NEW EPISODE on Brn Skn Speaks radio: Back to Basics 101…have you loved your self lately?
In a society where media perpetuates self-loathing, patriarchy, and negative stereotypes of women of color, I wonder where one begins to define their foundation of self-love (if it didn’t start at home). In this episode, I look to freelance writer Jo Nubian and Valeisha Butterfield, co-founder/chair of WEEN, Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network, as they share their views, experiences, and personal insight on building and preserving a strong self-love foundation.

ALBUM REVIEW: Dwele- W.ants W.orld W.omen
After gracing us on Kanye West’s fiery track Power, Dwele is back with his latest EP, W.ants, W.orld, W.omen…
W.ants…The album opens up showing that this soul, chill brother can have and does have an alterego too. He describes his wants from having the Gucci shoes, to the flashy things but keeps it in perspective of him being able to obtain these “things” if he wants too. He takes us to a sensual side on the track “Dim the Lights” with Raheem Devaughn. TURN ‘EM OFF lol. This track is the essence of what attracted me to Dwele’s music to begin with.
W.orld…He then takes us through his “audio time capsule” on tracks like “How I Deal” featuring Slum Village and “My People”, addressing issues most of us can relate to such as prejudice, not having money to pay the bills, child support, etc. We’re constantly chasing some thing in this world, looking for answers but still end up where we began.
W.omen…Wanting to ease a woman’s hurt and seeking to understand her, Dwele explores the journey and pains we deal with in relationships on “I Understand”. He turns it up with the DJ Quik produced track “I Wanna.” Very uptempo and fun, he keeps it simple with what he’s looking for.
Dwele offers a little bit of something for everyone on his latest EP (*Bonus track “Motivate” is available on iTunes*). Learn more about him here. Until next time Brn Skn speaks…
MIXTAPE: John Graham- Ascension Methods
John Graham’s Ascension Methods is full of light, knowledge, and his own experiences. In essence, it’s music worth listening to. I love the smoothness in “Meditation Staycation” and “Extenuating Circumstances” as well as the appalling truths in the “The Business of Being Born” and “Good Food” interludes. Open your mind and let his lyrics transcend your thoughts. Until next time Brn Skn speaks…
Brn Music Treat- “Keep on Walkin”
If you miss the 90s, you will definitely appreciate this Brn Music Treat. Time to time I post videos of throwback songs that have a special place in my heart. After recently hearing this on the radio in DC during a rush hour mix Friday, it made me question ‘what the hell happened to Ce Ce Peniston?” So I went looking for her. Any old school songs you want to share or think I should…let me know. Until next time Brn Skn speaks…
Have you seen the NEW ROOTS VIDEO?
Favorite song off of How I Got Over by The Roots finally has a video! The symbolism, metaphors, and visuals painted such a gruesome but telling tale. I’ll let you figure it out though. Until next time Brn Skn speaks…don’t let THE (your) FIRE burn out

More from Skipp Coon & Mister Nick: Women Revolution Tennis Shoes
Here’s some more music from Skipp Coon and Mister Nick called Women Revolution Tennis Shoes. This mixtape will invoke a sense of vulnerability that can’t be denied.
My favorites are “Drift”, “I Can’t Cope”, “Concrete”, “What If I”, “Color Complex”, and “Women Revolution Tennis Shoes”. Simply put, he does this for the “women”, the revolution, and his tennis shoes (hence the name of the EP). Skipp makes it clear he is willing to fight for his people, die for his people, go to war for his people. The question then becomes how many are willing to do the same?
Listen live at 8 pm TONIGHT to hear my interview with him on Brn Skn Speaks radio. Send your questions to info@brnskn.com Until next time Brn Skn speaks…
